The battle for steel supremacy might come down to two Giga Coasters, Millennium Force and Fury 325 – both within the same [Cedar Fair] family of parks. Cedar Point’s Millennium Force has long been considered the gold standard of steel roller coasters. Since opening as the first Giga Coaster back in 2000, this 310ft coaster took the industry by storm and has, even since, been considered by many to be the steel coaster by which all others are compared. To clarify, a Giga Coaster is the classification for all roller coasters that are between 300 and 399 feet tall with a traditional lift hill (non-launched, out-and-back roller coaster), Consequently, it has won numerous awards throughout the years. Specifically, Millennium Force has been awarded the Golden Ticket Award (GTA) for Best Steel Coaster in all but five times since the coaster opened to the public. In each of those years (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009), it took second place. Each year, Cedar Point’s Giga Coaster is the odds-on favorite to receive this award.
Will Fury 325 Buzz By Millennium Force?
While Millennium Force is considered a gold standard among steel thrill machines, last year’s Best New Attraction might just fly by this legendary ride and take top honors. Nothing is certain, but it was significant that Fury 325 debuted on the GTA’s top 10 steel coaster list at number 4 in 2015. That debut by last year’s Best New Attraction in an Amusement Park Award Winner was also the best debut on that steel coaster list since Millennium Force jumped in back in 2000. With a second season for more GTA voters to get to Carowinds to ride Fury 325, it is quite possible that Millennium Force’s run atop the GTA’s steel list might be over. Will there be a changing of the guard in 2016, or can Millennium Force somehow squash the hornet? One thing to consider, if Fury 325 pulls it off, it would be the first time ever that a B&M coaster took top honors, supplanting Intamin and its 15-year reign at the top.
