Over the past few years, the popularity of alpine and mountain coasters has been on the rise. While many have been built across the United States, few counties in America can stake claim to having more of alpine coasters than those found in Sevier County, Tennessee. Between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, there are currently five mountain coasters with a sixth that is soon to join them. For those who love the outdoors and a coaster-like thrill, these five coasters should definitely be on your list to ride!
Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster
The first alpine coaster in the area and still the longest of the alpine coaster tracks in the area, this coaster offers guests a great outdoor experience through the woods. Designed by Wiegand Sports, riders can enjoy this attraction during any of the four seasons, and the experience at night is one that many prefer even more so. Check out all of those LEDs! Wow!
The Coaster at Goats on the Roof
Just down the street from Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster, enthusiasts can find The Coaster at Goats on the Roof. Also commonly referred to as the Goat Coaster, this attraction offers great experiences both day and night. Single and double riders can fly down the hill at speeds approaching 30 miles per hour. Overall, the experience is one enthusiasts will love time and time again. In addition to the alpine coaster, there are actually goats on the roof. The goats have been at the business long before the alpine coaster was added.
Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster
When driving from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg, enthusiasts will first see the Gatlinburg Mountain coaster on the left before reaching the downtown area. This coaster is really fun! It offers a number of helix turns that really make riders feel like they are about to be out of their seat. This track packs quite the punch as you speed down the hills at over 25 miles per hour.
Rowdy Bear Mountain Coaster
Just down the block from Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster is the newest alpine coaster in the area, Rowdy Bear Mountain Coaster. Nicely themed, this “Rowdy” experience is a great new addition to the Sevier County. As riders get to the top of the lift, they are given quite the view of Downtown Gatlinburg and the surrounding area. The night ride is also very awesome. Later in the fall, this place will offer even more for the enthusiasts – a first-of-its-kind mountain glider!
Ober Gatlinburg Ski Mountain Coaster
Drive up the mountain or take in the amazing views from the aerial tram ride to get to Ober Gatlinburg. Once at the resort area atop the mountain, enthusiasts will find a number of things to do, including the Ski Mountain Coaster! This coaster offers great views from high up in the elevation of the mountainside. The ride is fun during all seasons, offering unique views and thrills for enthusiasts of all ages. Don’t leave town without taking in the views from Ober.
Five great alpine attractions. We cannot just pick one! We love them all, and we cannot wait to ride them again. Soon, the area will welcome a sixth alpine experience. That will be at Anakeesta in Downtown Gatlinburg later this fall or winter. If you’re an enthusiast and in the area, be sure to ride each of these twice – YES TWICE! Ride them in the daytime and then return for a night ride where possible.
