While rain was a big threat for my biggest park weekend of the year, some ride closures at both Darien Lake and Fantasy Island, plus a headache on the first day, affected my total weekend ride count. However, over the course of 3 days that were full of many ups and downs, two unlikely “heroes” helped me get my first coaster rides of the 2017 season.
When we arrived at Darien Lake, we learned about the closure of a few important rides, including Ride of Steel, that was caused by an electrical difficulty. As we arrived, many of the closed rides started to reopen, with all of them open by the time we left. Another big damper was a very bad headache that decreased my riding options even more.
Still, it was opening weekend so I decided to at least ride the three rides in Rowdy’s Ridge, which is MUCH better than nothing at all. I finished off those rides and had a little something to eat. After a brief rest, we headed to a more intense Corn Popper. I felt like getting a little thrill in, and that ride hasn’t affected my headaches negatively thus far; by the time I got off, my headache decreased significantly, and the odds looked great for at least one coaster.
I still played it safe and skipped Viper and [of course] Mind Eraser, so we headed to Tin Lizzies for another gentle ride before making any decisions. By the time we exited that ride to the tune of David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel,” I made the decision to ride MotoCoaster, finally headache free for the first time that day. But, due to a light rain, there was a delay, so we decided to skip it.
Heading to Boomerang, I played it safe and rode Lasso, and then the Scrambler, which actually seemed less intense than the Corn Popper. My friend, Michael, needed a break, so I decided it was finally time for my first coaster of the year, Boomerang. In fact, it was the smoothest ride I’ve ever had on it, and, in my opinion, it was a great choice for my first coaster of 2017. It surely saved the day from being coaster free! Shortly thereafter, we went on the Haymaker, played two games; then, we called it a day due to the threat of more rain through Darien.

The negative about Fantasy Island’s Opening Weekend was purely Mother Nature – RAIN! With rain and bad weather comes multiple rides closures, but that bad news was quickly squashed by many positives – it’s hard NOT to have fun at Fantasy Island! Unfortunately [upon our arrival to the park], both the Silver Comet and Crazy Mouse were closed due to maintenance, putting a threat for no coasters in place. To start off the trip, we took some time to walk around the park and relax for a little bit, taking many photos along the way.
Riding started around 2pm and included my favorite flat rides like Rock N’ Roll and Mind Warp, but, by the time 3-3:30pm hit, the Crazy Mouse [thankfully] reopened; what can I say? The park’s maintenance crew is fantastic. As a result, I was able to add my second coaster of the year! This first mouse ride of the year was great, capped off by great “crazier” spinning that resulted from our weight distribution.! The rest of the 7-hour day at the park brought more flat rides and even a leisurely ride on their train. To top it off, we ran into the park’s new general manager, Chris Kearsing, who is an absolutely personable guy.
The following day was more simplistic than the previous, with 15 rides (including repeats) during only 2.5 hours spent at the park. The Crazy Mouse was up and running like never before; plus, I went on Max’s Doggy Dog Coaster for a credit! It was the best conclusion of Opening Weekend I could ask for, which will go down into history.
