The backyard roller coaster craze continues to grow, but, for one inspired young man, the drive to tell a story around it separates White Mountain Railroad from the pack. With a knack for creativity and theme-building, Jackson Crosskno of Canton, Georgia, had a vision for a backyard experience that teenagers could only dream of. In middle school, Jackson was like many kids – turning to technology for some entertainment. With a passion for amusement and theme parks, Jackson found many backyard roller coaster videos over on the popular video site and search engine, YouTube. Watching these videos, he noticed that many were creative and thrilling, but most lacked one element, theming. As a young boy, his family would take him to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. While at these theme parks, he came to appreciate the experience that theming adds to an attraction, and he wanted to use that motivation to build a unique, thrilling experience right in his backyard.
White Mountain Railroad Becomes Reality
Over the course of four or five years, he imagined and built White Mountain Railroad, a logging train-themed ride through the woods that shares a rich history of ill-fated logging in the region and a revitalized White Mountain National Park. While he lost track of the cost to build this attraction over the years, he has remained resourceful and cost-sensitive. Taking pointers and attraction examples from others who have built backyard attractions, Jackson designed and tested the coaster track, designed and built themed buildings, and developed a story behind the ride.
Future Builds & More
The attraction continues to evolve as the story is told and thrills given. Jackson is inspired to keep working on his backyard coaster, adding new effects and developing a second train! He continues to learn and work both hands-on and through various forms of study to master his craft, express his creativity, and reach his career goals of working for a major amusement park industry leader like Disney or Universal Studios.
