The sixth annual Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) Coasterthon for kids was a great success. Participants raised $16,674.67 for the family services division of CHOA, helping many children and their families get through difficult medical situations. Riders spent 55 minutes out of each hour on the Mind Bender coaster tallying up laps for CHOA. Mind Bender is a fan-favorite steel roller coaster that has been the roller coaster of choice for this event on three occasions (not counting the split event in 2015 where Mind Bender served as the morning coaster and Georgia Scorcher as the afternoon coaster). It offers a unique ride that takes riders upside down two times. Add in a sideways loop, and riders have quite a challenge on their hands. Thirteen riders remained on and completed all 85 laps.
6 Hours, 85 Laps for Charity!
During the six-hour event, riding participants rode 85 laps for the charity with the first lap being an unmanned lap in memory of Elaine Jackson, a significant member of both Team Coaster Addict and the CHOA Coasterthon over the years who passed away earlier this year. After the heartfelt moment and memorial lap, the riders secured themselves for the coasterthon experience. Thankfully, the weather cooperated quite nicely, allowing for an uninterrupted coasterthon endeavor. As the hours continued, the riders remained determined to conquer each lap. Nearly two hours into the event, the general public took over the other train on the track. As the laps on the coasterthon train continued, the crowds cheered on the riders and learned a bit more about the event and where the money was going to.
Six Flags Gives Back to the Community!
Each year, Six Flags Over Georgia hosts this fun event for coaster enthusiasts to give back to the community. Six Flags plays a large role in the Atlanta-area communities, and this partnership with CHOA is one great example of just that. Over the years, CHOA has been able to bring in tens of thousands of dollars to help offset medical costs for children in need. Over the years, this event has grown in popularity and seen various coasters selected to challenge riders in new ways.
Another Successful Coasterthon is in the Books!
The 2017 edition of the annual coasterthon was a great success, and it could not have been so without all of the generous donations. In addition to the numerous personal donations to all of the riders, Team Coaster Addict’s four participating riders really appreciate its business sponsors, especially Inkwell Designers (of Atlanta, Georgia), Ober Gatlinburg (of Gatlinburg, Tennessee), Debbie Sholes Accounting and Tax Services (of Davison, Michigan), The Coaster at Goats on the Roof (of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee), Ted’s Montana Grill (of Marietta, Georgia), and Killer Konceptz (of Kennesaw, Georgia). Thank you for all of your help, support, and generosity!
