It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… Iron Dragon? Starting June 9, 2017, riders at Cedar Fair’s flagship park, Cedar Point, will have the ability to take part in an immersive virtual reality (VR) experience on one of Cedar Point’s most beloved family coasters, Iron Dragon. This is a major move for Cedar Fair after their regional competitor, Six Flags, has been incorporating this technology on their coasters and drop towers since last year, albeit to mixed reviews.
Major Downfall of VR on Roller Coasters
The major issue is the wait time – from the extended dispatch times resulting in queue lines in excess of several hours to the amount of time it takes to sanitize and outfit each rider with VR headsets. These problems have plagued many of Six Flag’s rides from The New Revolution to Superman Ride of Steel.
Cedar Point’s solution
Offering the VR experience in the evening (after 6 p.m.) while retaining normal operations during the day. As a result, those expecting to have a pure riding experience on one of the last Arrow suspended roller coasters won’t have to endure long queue times during the day.
What will be Featured in the VR Experience?
At this time, little is known about what riders should expect out of this VR experience; outside of testing last season, little is known. However, Cedar Point’s Director of Communications, Tony Clark wrote a bit about it, saying “you’re on a wagon and you’re carrying something very, very important on it. So important, that everyone wants it – villagers, ogres and other characters. They’re going to stop at nothing to get the goods from you.” I will not speculate on what the story entails, but one can assume that the name itself will lend an interesting experience nonetheless!
This may not be a first for a major amusement park, but the new virtual reality experience will offer a fun new take on this amazing family coaster, and guests can decide which they’d rather enjoy, the classic ride along without an overly extended wait in the queue or the VR experience that is sure to draw a few curious thrill seekers! This VR opportunity ends in September; will you be checking it out this summer?
