As the 2016 season comes to a close, Carowinds begins to shift some focus on its 2017 project – building a brand new County Fair section of the park. To make way for the new enhanced guest experience, the Cedar Fair park has started to remove its older water slide structure, Southern Sidewinder. In a perfect world, no older rides would be removed, but, in this case, the park does not necessarily have unlimited land to work with. As a result, some tough decisions have to be made from time to time. Since Carowinds spent the 2015 off-season building a brand new water park, Carolina Harbor, this older water slide could be spared for the greater good. When guests enter Carowinds in 2017, a brand new County Fair section will be awaiting them and will likely help them forget about the Southern Sidewinder that was sacrificed for this expansion.
